The La Ventana Kite Season: When to Come and What to Expect

MPMC Production 1 min read

Why the wind is so reliable in La Ventana, the best months to visit, and what kite season means if you own a home here.

Every winter, kitesurfers and wing foilers from the US, Canada and Europe arrive in La Ventana. For many of them it becomes a yearly ritual, and for some it becomes the reason to buy a home here.

Why the wind works here

In winter, the north wind blows down the Sea of Cortez. Between Cerralvo Island and the mainland, the channel funnels and accelerates it, giving steady side-shore conditions on many days. That reliability is what made La Ventana famous.

The best months

The main season runs roughly from November to March, with the strongest and most consistent days usually in December, January and February. October and April can be good too, with warmer water and fewer people.

What to bring

  • A range of kite sizes, as wind strength changes from day to day.
  • A 3/2 wetsuit or shorty for the cooler months.
  • Sun protection: the desert sun is strong even in winter.

What it means for homeowners

Kite season is also rental season. Many visitors stay for weeks at a time and look for homes with space for gear, a place to rinse equipment and somewhere to relax after a session. A garage, outdoor shower, pool and rooftop terrace are all features visiting kiters value.
